We are proud to celebrate a remarkable milestone for Darren Middleton, Immigration Director in our Birmingham office, who marks 10 years with Duncan Lewis Solicitors.
Darren’s decade-long career with the firm has been defined by an unwavering dedication to justice, particularly for the most vulnerable individuals navigating the complexities of asylum, immigration, and public law. Accredited as a Supervising Senior Caseworker under the Immigration and Asylum Law Accreditation Scheme, Darren has become widely respected for his meticulous case preparation, strategic thinking, and exceptional ability to achieve positive outcomes in even the most challenging cases.
Over the past ten years, Darren has successfully represented clients from across the globe, including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. His expertise extends to complex asylum and deportation matters, judicial reviews, and appeals before the Tribunal, with a track record of landmark cases – including the reported decisions of R (ZV) v SSHD [2020] EWHC 3562 (Admin) and R (Thadeu) v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2025] EWHC 736 (Admin), both of which have provided critical guidance for practitioners and clients alike.
Jason Bruce, Practice Director, said "Darren has shown unwavering commitment to his clients and a consistent work ethic over the past decade. His ability to navigate complex matters with focus and care has made him a valued member of the team. We’re pleased to mark this milestone and recognise the contribution he has made to the firm and the wider immigration practice.”
Beyond his casework, Darren’s contributions extend to the wider legal community. Previously as a member of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber Committee Working Group at the Birmingham Tribunal, he played an active role in shaping best practices and improving processes for those seeking justice.
Reflecting on his journey, Darren credits his early experiences with the Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre as the inspiration that set him on the path to becoming a solicitor. His work continues to be guided by a deep belief that a well-prepared application can make a decisive difference to the lives of clients and their families.
One of Darren’s most memorable cases, CLM v SSHD, exemplifies his tenacity and dedication. What began as a seemingly unwinnable case in 2011 ultimately resulted in success at the Upper Tribunal – a victory that highlighted the importance of perseverance and thorough preparation in immigration law, with Upper Tribunal Judge Bruce noting [para 10] that ‘[i]t is difficult to see what more could have been done to advance the case on his behalf’.
Darren describes the most rewarding part of his role as “having the opportunity to have a decisive impact on people’s lives.” Moments such as being stopped in the street by a former client, who proudly shared how his family had thrived following Darren’s help, underline the enduring difference his work has made.
Darren works together with a team in the Birmingham office, who actively work in immigration, asylum and public law work, and who have achieved a number of successes, especially with those clients in immigration detention. Recently he has started working with a number of caseworkers in India, and looks forward to working with them.
As we celebrate this milestone, we thank Darren for his exceptional contributions, leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice over the past decade. His dedication not only strengthens our Immigration department but also upholds the values of Duncan Lewis Solicitors.
