Lack of Highway Code knowledge may increase speeding offences (9 May 2014)

New research by More Than has revealed that one-third of motorists do not know basic Highway Code essentials such as the speed limit or the meaning of common road signs.
Researchers found that 34% of motorists on Britain’s roads do not know what the National Speed Limit sign is – and figures from 29 police forces suggest that 20% of drivers have received penalty points for speeding offences in the last 10 years.
Many drivers are thought to have exceeded the speed limit as a result of not knowing basic road signs such as speed limit warnings.
Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are now one of the most common reasons for personal injury claims in the UK – and among Britons abroad. Motor insurance companies have repeatedly blamed claims for whiplash injuries sustained in RTAs as a reason for spiralling motor insurance costs.
Whiplash injuries occur when the head is flexed backwards and forwards rapidly, stretching neck and shoulder muscles. Whiplash injuries commonly incur in impact RTAs, such as head on collisions or rear shunt road accidents; as well as during heavy braking when a car is speeding, or loses traction on the road as a result of travelling too fast on ice or slippery road surfaces.
Janet Connor of More Than says the research reveals a worrying number of drivers “for whom speeding is an acceptable everyday behaviour”, however:
“Couple this with shocking ignorance when it comes to the most common road signs – which are designed to help ensure safe and responsible driving – and you've got a recipe for road disaster,” she added.
