The 57-year-old driver of a coach – which crashed resulting in the death of two elderly passengers – has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The crash in Looe, Cornwall yesterday (13/05/14) involved a coach party of pensioners travelling from Devon with Exeter-based coach firm Carmel.

Police were called to the scene at 1pm, after the coach turned over on its side on the A387, after colliding firstly with a hedge and then a wall. A woman passenger died at the scene and a second woman died later in hospital. A further seven passengers were injured, the Mail online reports – with two of the most seriously injured taken to hospital by air ambulance.

It is thought the coach suffered brake failure on a hill and the driver’s attempts to maintain control as he wrestled with the wheel led to passengers being thrown around inside the coach, with all the coach windows being blown out.

A total of forty passengers were on board – all of them pensioners on an outing, which it is reported was organised by Age Concern in Exmouth.

The driver has been taken into police custody at Launceston.

A local resident said that the road on which the crash occurred was “difficult to negotiate” as it is winding.

“We've been waiting for something like this to happen for a while. People use the road too fast. Although there are ‘slow’ signs, people just don't follow them.

“The road is quite bendy and can be tricky, particularly for big vehicles. I think that part – where I think the accident was – is particularly tricky. It comes down from a hill – quite a steep hill. Amazingly there have been no accidents on the road until this.”
