A British mother and her daughter have been injured in an explosion described as a holiday accident, while staying at a well known package holiday hotel in Tenerife.

The holidaymakers were injured when a buffet container which is heated using gel exploded, scattering debris across bystanders. The buffet container was situated in the pool area of the hotel grounds.

The woman suffered severe burn injuries to her face, neck and scalp and her eight-year-old daughter was also injured and has been treated for neck burns which are thought to be less severe than her mother’s injuries.

The woman’s husband and another daughter escaped injury, but are said to be suffering from shock.

Two other holidaymakers from Belgium and Spain were also injured in the holiday explosion, which hotel staff are describing as an accident. A 38-year-old from Belgium and a 34-year-old from Spain have been taken to hospital.

The explosion happened at the Bahia Principe Costa Adeje hotel in the popular holiday resort of Adeje on Friday (27/12/13).

A spokesman for the Bahia Principe Costa Adeje hotel said:
"The explosion took place in a metal buffet container by the pool which uses a flammable gel to keep food warm.
“This was an accident and we still are not sure what went wrong – we are awaiting the investigation of the judicial police,” said the spokesman.

"The swimming pool is now open again and the hotel is back to normal. We would like to wish those who were injured a speedy recovery," the spokesman added.

The hotel has denied that a third Briton – reportedly a man – has also suffered injuries in the holiday blast.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has confirmed it has received a report of injuries to Britons on holiday in Tenerife:

"We are aware of an incident involving two British nationals and are providing consular assistance.
"We are currently checking, but based on what we know so far there was no British man injured in the explosion,” said an FCO spokesman.

Local government officers in Adeje have issued a statement about the incident:

"At 4.09pm on Friday, emergency services were called to an explosion in a machine in a poolside bar at a hotel in the town of Adeje, with several people suffering from burn injuries. Emergency resources were immediately mobilised.
“Fire crews attended to inspect the zone, but their intervention was not necessary."
