Automotive assessor compensated for workplace injuries (26 March 2014)

An automotive assessor from Wales who suffered serious personal injuries after a fall in the workplace caused by a fellow colleague's mistake has secured a five-figure settlement.
John Williams was attempting to inspect a handbrake on a stationary car on a mechanical ramp in 2013 when a trainee colleague raised the platform several feet without warning. Mr Williams then exited the vehicle after completing the checks and subsequently fell onto the concrete floor below.
He suffered numerous injuries to his lower back, shoulder and neck during the fall, while his existing arthritis problems were exacerbated in the weeks afterwards. Mr Williams has now secured £10,000 in compensation after his employer, Blaenau Gwent Country Borough Council, admitted that health and safety obligations had been breached, as the trainee had not undergone sufficient training.
Mr Williams said: “I was planning to stay on at work for at least the next couple of years as I was fit and healthy enough to continue. However, after the accident this just wasn't possible. Effectively, the accident forced me out from the job I loved and robbed me of vital future earnings.”
UNISON Regional Secretary in Wales, Margaret Thomas concluded: “This accident was totally avoidable and demonstrates the importance of all staff being either properly trained or adequately supervised.”
