The government is to introduce a law which would make publishing pornographic photos of a sexual partner or former partner without their permission a criminal offence.

Explicit images are becoming more common on social media sites – often taken and posted online as a means of promoting a “fun” image to friends or as a result of peer pressure.

However, having indecent images or videos with sexual content published by a former partner as an act of revenge can cause victims intense distress.

There are also concerns that images of youngsters under the age of consent are increasingly being posted online as a result of peer pressure – and these are being shared online and used to cyberbully victims.

Since 2012, eight police forces across England and Wales have recorded 149 cases of revenge pornography, some involving children as young as 11.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said that the government would consider amending the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill to cover revenge pornography.

In some of the most serious cases, offenders posting revenge pornography online could face a 14-year jail sentence.

Mr Grayling said:

“We want those who fall victim to this type of disgusting behaviour to know that we are on their side – and will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.
“That is why we will change the law and make it absolutely clear to those who act in this way that they could face prison.”
