The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has called Ian Stewart’s attempts to disguise the murder of his partner, author Helen Bailey, “cynical and deceitful”.

Ms Bailey went missing in spring 2016 – her body was discovered hidden in a cesspit in her garage, along with that of her Dachshund dog's, three months’ later. She had been drugged and suffocated.

The court heard that Stewart, 56, had drugged Ms Bailey using his own sleeping tablets. After killing her and hiding her body, he sent her text messages and emails in a bid to cover his tracks.

The couple were due to marry and Stewart stood to inherit her multi-million pound fortune following her death.

Police found Ms Bailey’s body at her home in Royston, Hertfordshire on 15 July 2016, months after Stewart had reported her missing. It had at first been thought Miss Bailey had left her home to spend time on her own.

Ian Stewart was convicted of Helen Bailey’s murder on Wednesday, after a six-week trial at St Albans Crown Court. He will be sentenced in due course.

After the hearing, Charles White from the CPS, said:

“Ian Stewart murdered Helen Bailey and then conducted a cynical, deceitful and calculated charade, as he watched the police conduct a futile missing person investigation.

The prosecution presented a case to the jury which clearly showed how Stewart was linked to Helen's disappearance through mobile phone, computer and CCTV evidence.

Our thoughts are with Helen's family and friends, who have been devastated by her death. I hope today's conviction reassures them that justice has been done.”
