Lee Rigby verdict – both men guilty of murder (20 December 2013)

The two men accused of murdering Fusilier Lee Rigby outside Woolwich Barracks in May have been found guilty at the Old Bailey in London.
The two men – Michael Adebolajo, 29 and Michael Adebowale, 22 – had both denied murdering the soldier, but did not deny the killing. Lee Rigby was mown down by a car driven by the men, before being hacked to death. The two men also had a gun with them.
The prosecution case questioned the two men’s assertions that they had the right to attack a military target, and considered a soldier a legitimate target given the accepted risk to their life when they signed up, as well as British foreign policy in Muslim countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. Both men are of Nigerian origin and are Muslims. Michael Adebolajo had called the attack on Drummer Lee Rigby an act of war and said he was a soldier of Allah.
The jury at the Old Bailey took 90 minutes to decide both men were guilty of the murder of Lee Rigby.
The jury decided, however that they had not intended to kill a police officer at the time they attacked Lee Rigby.
Another charge of conspiracy to kill a police officer had been dropped.
The two men will be sentenced in the New Year for the brutal attack on Lee Rigby.
The soldier at the time of his death was off duty and was returning to the barracks after working for a day at the Tower of London; but was identifiable as a soldier by his Help for Heroes sweatshirt and army rucksack as he walked near the barracks.
