A disqualified driver caught behind the wheel of a car by an Automatic Number Plate Recognition Camera (ANPR) has pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while disqualified and of having no insurance.

Darren Herse, 45, of Hotwells Road in Bristol was caught driving a grey Ford Transit on Muller Road in Bristol at approximately 11am hours on the 27 July 2017.

The vehicle activated an Automatic Number Plate Recognition Camera (ANPR) for a vehicle possibly being driven by a male who is disqualified.

At Bristol Magistrates’ Court on 14 August he was handed an eight-week curfew between the hours of 7pm and7am – and was ordered to pay court costs of £85, as well as an £85 victim surcharge. Herse was disqualified for 30 months and was also given an additional 15 hours of unpaid work for breaching his current disqualification.

CPS South West District Crown Prosecutor James Le Grys said:

“Despite being disqualified from driving, Mr Herse still took the decision to drive a vehicle.

“If you get back behind the wheel of a car after you have been disqualified, what you are saying by your actions is that you do not care what the court says – and this will not be tolerated.

“It is an absolute offence – there are no exceptions in the law. If you are given a driving ban, then if at any time during that ban you get behind the wheel of a car and go on the road, then you are driving while disqualified.”
