Social Services, also referred to as the Local Authority or children`s services, are a Government body with a legal obligation to safeguard and promote the welfare of a child in their designated area.
This obligation includes ensuring that a child is not suffering physical, sexual, emotional or psychological harm and is not being neglected by their care provider.
The Local Authority also have a duty to accommodate a child who may be homeless, at risk in their home or who has been abandoned by their care providers.
If social services become involved with a family, then the family will be allocated a Social Worker. The Social Worker will advise and assist them throughout any assessments, enquiries or court proceedings.
It is extremely important that parents engage with Social Services and undertake any work, which has been recommended for them.
Social Services can be involved with the family in a number of different ways. Their duties are outlined in the Children Act 1989 and include a duty to investigate concerns, provide a range of services to assist the child, provide accommodation for the child, issue care proceedings and make an application for a care order, supervision order, emergency protection order or an assessment of the child.
