A Family Group Conference, also known as a FGC, is a meeting held with the parents and family members of the subject child to discuss the Local Authority’s concerns and put plans in place for the future. It is advisable that you attend any family group conference if arranged.
During the meeting, the Local Authority will ask the care providers of the child who they wish to invite to the Family Group Conference. Those that are invited can consist of family members or close friends. The care providers will be required to provide their contact details so that the Local Authority can send them an invitation to the meeting.
An independent coordinator will assist the family members to discuss matters with professionals to assist them in gaining a better understanding of the concerns and allowing them the opportunity to discuss how they feel and any potential recommendations together with time frames.
This will allow the necessary time to make any changes and ensure that the child remains with the family at home. If the Local Authority believe that this is not possible, the Family Group Conference will consider alternative placement options for the child.
Solicitors are not usually able to attend a Family Group Conference as this is intended to be a direct meeting between the family members and the professionals.
If there are any issues identified following the Family Group Conference then the legal representative can raise these issues with the Local Authority.
