Cerebral Palsy is characterised by an inability to fully control motor function. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and life changing. Cerebral Palsy affects approximately 2 out of every 1000 children. Cerebral Palsy can occur for non-negligent reasons, for example, babies that are born prematurely have a higher incidence of cerebral palsy compared to babies that are born full term. The condition may be caused by an infection in early pregnancy, abnormal brain development or a lack of oxygen to the brain. Cerebral Palsy is caused by the damage to the part of the brain that controls motor functions.
In some cases, the development of cerebral palsy may be as a result of negligent medical treatment. For example, a delay in the delivery of a baby can lead to oxygen deprivation and subsequent brain damage. A failure to utilise assistive technology during childbirth has the potential to cause brain damage.
