We are pleased to announce the appointments of Rohena Wallace as Director of Public Law & Immigration and Zofia Duszynska as Director of Immigration.

Rohena Wallace

Solicitor, Rohena Wallace has been appointed as Director of Public Law and Immigration. She joined Duncan Lewis in September 2011 and has a considerable practice in immigration/asylum judicial review claimant matters. She has a particular specialism in representing vulnerable clients, including victims of torture and trafficking and those with severe mental health issues. She has been instrumental in the development of the highly successful Public Law team in Harrow, which has recently been shortlisted as Legal Aid Team of the Year for Solicitor Journal Awards 2017.

Rohena regularly represents clients in complex challenges to removal, particularly on the basis of the Dublin Regulations, playing a key role in litigation challenging removals to countries such as Italy and Cyprus. Rohena also acts for clients who have been unlawfully detained, to secure their release and subsequently claim for damages on their behalf. She has also acted for a client in SIAC proceedings. Rohena is an Advanced Level 3 accredited Immigration Solicitor and supervisor under the Law Society Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme.

Zofia Duszynska

Zofia Duszynska joined Duncan Lewis in August 2015 and specialises in asylum work and has particular expertise in cases involving gender-based persecution, asylum-seeking children, human trafficking and exclusion from the Refugee Convention. Zofia possesses wide experience in representing adult and child victims of human trafficking for domestic servitude, sexual and labour exploitation in both their applications to be recognised as victims of trafficking and in international protection claims.

Zofia was a founder member of ATLeP (Anti-Trafficking Legal Project) an information network of lawyers and specialist practitioners assisting victims of trafficking. She also joined a team of British lawyers in a journey to Calais to help reunite stranded refugee children with their family members in the UK. This was in relation to the ground-breaking order at the Court of Appeal, ruling that unaccompanied children and dependent adults should, under European law, be allowed to be reunited with their family members in the UK whilst their asylum claims were being considered.

Zofia is an accredited supervisor in immigration and Level 2 senior caseworker under the Law Society’s Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme, and has previously worked as a solicitor at the Hammersmith & Fulham Law Centre, Refugee & Migrant Justice and Asylum Aid.

Zofia’s notable cases include:

SB Moldova CG [2008] UKAIT 00002 (PSG - Victims of Trafficking - Protection Regulations - Regulation 6) which established that former victims of trafficking could be a particular social group for protection under the Refugee Convention.

S and others [2006] EWCA Civ 1157 (Judicial review of Home Office failure to apply policies, abuse of power, extent of temporary admission for those granted limited leave to remain but excluded from the Refugee Convention).
