Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, £750,000 claim by mother for delays in cancer diagnosis which may have cost her life

A woman from South Wales is suing the NHS for £750,000, after doctors failed to treat her symptoms as urgent, with the result that her cancer is now terminal.

The Mail on Sunday reports that 35-year-old Katy Maytum found a lump in her left breast in July 2010, but consultant surgeon Vummiti Muralikrishnan at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend allegedly decided that her case was not urgent suspected cancer.

She returned to her GP in September 2010 but was not given an appointment for an ultrasound scan by the hospital until January 2011, when cancer was diagnosed.

Ms Maytum – a mother-of-two – eventually underwent surgery and chemotherapy, but was told in April that she has 18 months to live.

However, NHS Wales says that it followed guidelines relating to the management of referral to treatment waiting times – although the trust admits Mrs Maytum’s case was downgraded under the hospital’s internal rules.

Advice from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) states that such cases should be given a hospital appointment within three months, according to a report in The Sunday Times.

The case is due to start in Cardiff’s High Court on Monday (24/11/14).

The claim for damages involves a sum of £7,500 per year from April 2017 to April 2027, when her son will reach 21 – and covers the cost of childcare for her two children.

Abertaw Bro Morgannwg University Health Board – which runs the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend – declined to comment on the case.
