The High Court has awarded £4.8 million in compensation to a 10-year-old boy who needed a kidney transplant as a toddler, following a medical blunder at a private hospital in London.
The London Evening Standard reports that Lucas Tuppeny developed septic shock shortly after delivery at the Cromwell Hospital in South Kensington – now a Bupa hospital.
The following day, Lucas required surgery and spent months on a dialysis machine, before his father Brock donated a kidney for a transplant to save his life.
The 10-year-old has undergone 28 operations since his birth and will require further kidney transplants when he is older.
Bupa inherited liability for the error when it bought the Cromwell Hospital in 2008.
Judge Richard Parkes QC made the award two years after the hospital offered an unreserved apology to the family.
Lucas’ mother Therese Tuppeny said that her son has a chronic medical condition, requiring hospital treatment for the rest of Lucas’ life.
The hospital admitted a breach of duty relating to Lucas’ care after his birth in 2004.
