A schoolboy who contracted a splinter injury from a school bench has been awarded nearly £3,000 in compensation.
The pupil at Winterbourne Junior School in Thornton Heath, south London, was seven at the time of the accident. He sat on a wooden bench in class at the school and the splinter caused an injury which took four weeks to heal and was deemed likely to leave a permanent scar.
Croydon Council paid £2,760 to the boy’s family in settlement of the injury. A spokesman for the council said:
“There was an incident several years ago where a child received a small injury from a splinter on a wooden bench.
“The matter was settled following a claim by the pupil’s parents.”
The school has declined to comment on the case, but other parents with children at the school say the case demonstrates how the compensation culture has “gone mad“. One mother whose child is a pupil at the school said:
“All of the mums have been laughing about it. It is such a joke. How can they say it is the school's fault and sue them because he got a splinter on his bum?"
Chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, Chris McGovern, told the website Parentdish.com that children were being “robbed of their childhood” by being “wrapped up in cotton wool”.
“Schools react by stopping any activity that includes even the lowest level of risk ? meaning children miss out on fun and educational activities.
"We really need a lead from the courts on this ? common sense needs to prevail."
