The government is providing an additional £140 million to help local councils repair damage to roads as a result of the winter storms across the UK.

Potholes, uneven road surfaces and damage to road surfaces can increase the risk of road traffic accidents (RTAs) – and poorly maintained road surfaces also mean road markings may not be clear or tyres wear down faster.

Uneven road surfaces and potholes can be especially treacherous for cyclists and motorcyclists.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has announced that £36.5m of the additional funding will be kept aside for councils who have experienced the worst of the flooding across Britain this winter.

Local Authorities can apply for a share of the remaining £103.5m fund.

Some local councils have already spent large amounts of their annual budgets to repair road surfaces – it is reported that Surrey County Council has spent a total of £15m on restoring road surfaces. However, even funding from the additional money set aside to help local councils repair roads may still lead to some councils having to make budget cuts elsewhere.

Cabinet Member for Transport, Highways and Environment with Surrey County Council, John Furey, told Sky News:
“The biggest problem has been the inspection times. We haven't been able to get in and look and see how much has needed to be done.

"Now we're doing it. We've started the recovery stage. Now we're looking at what needs to be done and looking at what government is going to put into this.

“The reason is that it's been a continuous flooding situation, not something that happened and then we could deal with it. It's double the problem for this year.”

The government has said it hopes the funding will ensure that roads are repaired in time for the summer.
