A Tonbridge dental patient who lost two teeth after receiving poor dental treatment won £10,800 in compensation, the Kent and Sussex Courier reports.

Annette Stranger, 47, sued her dentist after she learned that his failure to diagnose and treat tooth decay had caused her to lose two teeth.

Ms Stranger was a patient of Dr David Bush – formerly of the Tonbridge Dental Centre.

“I was with Tonbridge Dental Centre for more than 10 years and started seeing Dr Bush in 2002,” she says.

“I first went to him then because I had a root canal and my gums had become very discoloured. I thought there was something wrong with my teeth – he assured me everything was fine and gave me no treatment.”

However, an X-ray taken at Ms Stranger’s first appointment with Dr Bush showed that she had underlying dental decay beneath a crown, which was left untreated for six years. By the time Dr Bush advised treatment, the tooth could not be saved and Dr Bush performed an extraction without advising Ms Stranger of any other treatment options.

Dr Bush was also found to have left decay affecting another of Ms Stranger’s teeth untreated from 2005 to 2007. In July 2008, he performed root canal treatment and crowned the tooth – however, Dr Bush failed to remove all the decay from the tooth before fitting the crown.

In 2009, the crown dislodged and Ms Stranger sought the opinion of another dentist. She was advised that the tooth was now so badly decayed that it was likely she would lose it. It was eventually taken out in 2012.

Dr Bush did not accept liability or the facts of the case as presented by Ms Stranger’s legal team. However, a settlement of £10,800 was agreed.

Dr Bush declined to comment fully because of patient confidentiality, but said:

“I am disappointed that the treatment fell short of what the patient expected and I hope the settlement goes some way to resolving the matter.”
