£10,500 penalty after worker loses fingers in industrial accident (15 June 2016)

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has prosecuted a London-based metal packaging company, after a worker trapped his hand in a power press and lost two fingers.
The worker was employed at Roberts Metal Packaging Limited in south London – an internationally known company, which supplies pre-threaded screw-caps, godets, and aluminium and tinplate containers to leading brands.
The unnamed employee suffered severe damage to his left hand, after getting his hand trapped underneath the punch on a mechanical power-press.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that the company had failed to prevent access to this dangerous part of the machinery.
At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Roberts Metal Packaging Limited of Nathan Way, Thamesmead in south London pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
The company was fined £7,000 and ordered to pay costs of £3,520.
