Bradford Magistrates’ Court has fined a steel galvanising company £9,000, after an employee sustained fractures to his leg and foot in a workplace accident.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted T & D Galvanising Ltd of Bowling Back Lane in Bradford, after Ali Zada was injured in June 2015.
Mr Zada was lifting wires tied around the bundle of mesh panels he was lifting with an overhead crane, when the bundle snapped on one side, causing the mesh panels to swing down and strike his leg, knocking him to the floor.
The mesh panels were of a size that meant they had to be turned and double dipped into the molten zinc tank, resulting in the ties becoming brittle following the galvanisation process.
The court heard that there had been previous incidents at the firm of loads falling from overhead cranes where the wire ties had not been tied properly to the work pieces being moved and had become loose.
Employees had also not been instructed about the safe working load limits of the wire ties – or the number of the safe methods of tying the wires, HSE investigators found.
At Bradford Magistrates’ Court, T & D Galvanising Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was fined £9,000 with £1,379 costs.
After the hearing, HSE inspector Andrea Jones said:
“No checks were made to ensure that employees were aware and understood that wire ties should not be re-used after being dipped into the zinc tank.
“This accident could have had fatal consequences – Mr Zada was fortunate not to have received more serious injuries.
“This demonstrates the importance of planning lifting operations and training of employees to ensure safe methods are followed.”
