Woman scarred after cheek implants warns of the dangers of cosmetic surgery (19 January 2015)

Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Woman scarred after cheek implants warns of the dangers of cosmetic surgery

A 53-year-old woman who had cosmetic fillers injected into her face was left fighting for her life after experiencing an adverse reaction to the chemicals used.

London newspaper Metro reports that Alex Laird opted for cheek implants after enduring years of negative comments about how miserable she looked. She thought that having a facial uplift procedure using implants in her cheeks might resolve the issue of having a “miserable” face.

She chose a London cosmetic surgeon to carry out the procedure and flew from her home in Ireland for the operation. She had temporary implants at first, but the results were not what she wanted as the fillers reduced to the size of “two teaspoons” after two months – and the outline of the filler was clearly visible through her skin.

Ms Laird then decided she would have permanent cheek implants using a Bio-Alcamid filler which would be injected at a London clinic.

She returned to the UK for the procedure, despite her friends and family trying to persuade her not to go ahead with the cosmetic procedure.

Her cosmetic surgeon injected filler into her entire face – and although friends and family were shocked at the result, Ms Laird was pleased with her appearance. However, as the filler settled, most of it relocated to her cheekbones, leaving her with two prominent bulges where her cheekbones should have been.

After seeing her GP – who advised her to take legal action against the cosmetic surgeon – she flew back to London where her surgeon attempted to remove some of the cosmetic filler from her bulging cheeks.

“He squeezed some out – mainly around my temple area. I remember thinking that it was like a ticking time-bomb in my face,” said Ms Laird.

She had initially been told by her cosmetic surgeon that the filler was safe – and that he had even injected some into his wife’s face.

However, after the procedure, Ms Laird developed a serious infection in her facial tissues – meaning that the filler needed to be removed urgently. She then went on to develop a second serious infection – and recalls how she was overcome with fear.

Ms Laird had to have all the filler removed surgically – as well as a facelift in a battle to save her appearance. She has been left permanently scarred and psychologically damaged.

Her story is covered by the Channel 5 show “Botched Up Bodies”.

“I wouldn’t advise anyone to have it done,” she warned.
