Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Westminster Council launches new Waterloo Bridge cycle route to help prevent cyclist injuries

City of Westminster Council has opened a new cycle route on Waterloo Bridge in south London, to help keep cyclists safe on London’s roads.

The route will make up part of the Central London Cycle Grid – a network of cycle routes linking key destinations, to overcome some of the barriers to cycling for less confident cyclists.

The Central London Cycle Grid is part of the Mayor of London’s Cycling Vision, delivering cycling network improvements across London.

The “cycle friendly” route across Waterloo Bridge offers a vital connection over the river, which at its peak sees 579 cyclists an hour – the third highest cycle flow in London.

It is hoped the route will reduce potential conflict with vehicles. The single yellow lines on the bridge have been changed to double yellow lines, with all parking suspended 24/7.

To link up with the current cycle route on the Lambeth side of Waterloo Bridge, a mandatory cycle lane has been introduced, extending to Embankment and the East-West Cycle Superhighway, past the Strand and up to Covent Garden.

Westminster City Council Cabinet member for Sustainability and Parking, Councillor Heather Acton, said:

“This is another key moment for London in becoming a cycling friendly city, making a positive difference to cyclists, as well as to pedestrians – whether residents or visitors to Westminster.

“Last year, the number of cyclists on Westminster’s roads increased by 20% –
and we are investing £40 million to improve our pedestrian and cycling environment.

“We have worked hard with Transport for London and will continue to implement cycle routes across Westminster.”
