Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Thomas Cook pays £5,000 compensation for Red Sea holiday illness

A couple who suffered from holiday food poisoning on a package holiday to Sharm el-Sheikh have been awarded £5,000 in compensation.

The Daily Mail reports that Cristian Magana Salgueiro, 30, and Mark Trevelyan, 29, from Somerset were staying at the Oriental Resort – booked through Thomas Cook – in July 2013, when they developed symptoms of sickness and diarrhoea. The symptoms continued after they returned home from the package holiday – and Mr Magana Salgueiro was still suffered from gastrointestinal symptoms a year later.

The couple said that while at the Oriental Resort they witnessed birds eating from the open-air buffet and from plates. They added that the food area – where birds helped themselves to food at a pasta station – was also swarming with cockroaches.

Just five days into their two-week Sharm el-Sheikh package holiday, Mr Magana Salgueiro began to experience severe stomach cramps and episodes of vomiting and diarrhoea up to twelve times a day.

His partner Mark Trevelyan also developed severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea and nausea, as well as sickness and exhaustion.

They contacted their GP on returning home and were told not to go to the surgery in case they were infectious.

The couple were diagnosed as having holiday stomach illness and were given antibiotics.

Compensation was agreed after Mr Magana Salgueiro and Mr Trevelyan took legal action against Thomas Cook.

A spokesman for Thomas Cook said in a statement:

“Thomas Cook is sorry that Mr Trevelyan and Mr Salgueiro fell ill while on holiday at the Oriental Resort in Sharm el-Sheikh in July 2013. We can confirm that we have reached an agreement with their legal representatives and that this matter is now resolved.

“We would like to assure customers that incidents of this type are rare, as Thomas Cook closely audits all the properties to which it operates to ensure that only the very highest hygiene standards are maintained.

“We would kindly ask any customers who may have concerns relating to their holiday to contact us directly and as quickly as possible while in resort or the UK, so that we can deal with them personally in an open, honest and fair manner.”
