Emergency services were called to a holiday park in Great Yarmouth on Monday (22/06/15), after a chlorine leak was reported at the centre’s swimming pool.
BBC News reports that 40 people were treated by paramedics at the Wild Duck Holiday Park in Belton, near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.
Emergency crews attended at around 2.35pm and described the casualties as “walking wounded”.
An environmental protection unit attended the holiday park to deal with the chlorine leak. Swimmers were treated for breathing and asthma problems – eight people were taken to hospital and were reported to be in a stable condition.
A spokesman for the park's owners – Haven Holidays – said around 40 people were treated, with 33 of them taken to hospitals at Gorleston, Norwich and Ipswich “as a precaution”.
He added:
“There was a chemical leak in the indoor swimming pool in the entertainment complex and it was evacuated while police and fire and rescue were on their way.
“The casualties have been described to me as walking wounded.”
Other guests were allowed back into their caravans while the swimming pools and entertainment complex remained sealed off for inspection by health and safety officials.
