Seven-figure personal injury settlement for injured mechanical worker (3 January 2014)

A mechanical fitter from Cumbria has received a £1 million settlement for a personal injury claim following an accident at a nuclear plant that left him without a leg.
Sixty-four year old Kenneth Brown, from Workington, was acting as a banksman for Johnson Controls at the Sellafield nuclear plant last summer when he was struck and knocked down by a cherry picker driven by a fellow employee.
Mr Brown had been attempting to direct the machine whilst walking on the roadway when it suddenly surged forward without warning. The victim's left leg sustained extensive crush injuries during the accident, which resulted in him losing the limb below the knee following an amputation procedure.
Unite the Union regional secretary Mick Whitley commented: “I'm pleased we have been successful in securing such a significant level of damages for our member, although this can never compensate for his traumatic ordeal of losing a leg in a workplace accident.”
A spokesperson for Johnson Controls also extended his best wishes to Mr Brown. He then went on to say: “The judge at the hearing commented ‘this was not a case of total or reckless disregard for the safety of employees’ and went on to say that Johnson Controls ‘had a well-established general safety policy.”
