New figures released by North Yorkshire County Council and City of York County Council show that the number of serious road traffic accidents involving cyclists has doubled in the first half of 2014, compared with the same period for last year.

Between 1 January and 31 July, one cyclist was killed on York’s roads and 10 cyclists suffered serious injuries in road traffic accidents. The number of cyclists injured in road accidents has steadily increased since 2010, when the figure was 123 cyclists injured on York’s roads.

In 2011, the number rose to 124 – but in 2012, there was a sharp increase to 139 cyclist injuries on York’s roads. In 2013, the number rose again to 148 cyclist injuries.

Data from North Yorkshire County Council shows that over the last two years there has been a 30% increase in cyclist injuries in North Yorkshire, from 26 to 34 between 2013 and 2014.

Cyclists injured were either treated in A&E – or spent a short period in hospital recovering from their injuries.

Head of Transport at City of York Council, Tony Clarke, said:
“The council was awarded £4.6 million government funding in 2011 towards its i-Travel York campaign, which has continued to provide advice and support to cyclists.

“The i-Travel project has supported other council schemes to provide cycle training for children and adults, introduce road safety campaigns specifically targeting the driver and cyclist interaction with vehicle stickers, continue working with younger, less experienced drivers through its Momentum scheme – and introduce the Road Safety Pledge road campaign.”
