Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Second cyclist dies this year on London’s roads

A second cyclist has been killed in London this year, after a man was crushed by a tipper truck on Homerton High Street on Monday (02/02/15) afternoon – less than three miles from the first fatal cycling accident of 2015.

In January, 29-year-old physiotherapist Stephanie Turner died in a cycle accident at the junction of Amhurst Road and Seven Sisters Road in north London.

Firefighters and paramedics fought to save the cyclist badly injured in Monday’s cycle collision, but were unable to save the victim, whose bicycle lost its front wheel in the crash, leaving the badly injured victim lying in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

London Mayor Boris Johnson has vowed to make cycling in London safer by introducing cycle superhighways across the capital, which will separate cyclists from other road users.

There has been criticism that an extensive network of cycle superhighway routes will slow down traffic in London and cause more congestion elsewhere.

However, the London Cycling Campaign said that, although lorries only make up 4% of London’s traffic, they are involved in around half of all cycling deaths in London.
After Monday’s fatal accident, a spokesman for Scotland Yard spokesman said:

“Police were called at about 4.20pm to reports of a cyclist in collision with an HGV in Homerton High Street.

“London Ambulance attended and found a man who was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver stopped at the scene and is helping officers with their enquiries.”

Witnesses to the incident are being asked to call the police with information.
