A dangerous South American bird is roaming the Hertfordshire countryside after escaping from its owner.
The rhea is an ostrich-like bird standing up to 6ft (1.8m) tall, which can run as fast as 40mph – and has the potential to kill with one blow. The rhea also has six-inch claws which potentially could disembowel a human if the bird attacked.
The bird was last seen at in a field near the village of Nuthampstead on Thursday (10/04/14) and near the village of Anstey on Sunday, The Telegraph reports.
The rhea escaped from its home – where it is kept as a pet – after being startled by the local hunt more than a month ago.
The rhea is unable to fly and the RSPCA is warning that if the bird attacks, it is likely to target the eyes of its prey. The RSPCA I warning the public not to approach the bird, as although they are normally timid, if they feel threatened they can attack.
The bird’s owner Jo Clarke keeps four of the birds at her property because they eat weeds. The birds also live off insects and small wildlife.
The escaped bird is a female and is around three years’ old.
Local residents in Hertfordshire are warning drivers in the area to be on the alert for the bird, which has been seen walking along the edge of a field near to the road.
