The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has said it is investigating an incident on 7 April, in which two railway workers narrowly avoided being struck by a train travelling through Ascot in Berkshire.
At around 1.30am on 7 April, the two railway workers narrowly missed being struck by the train at Ascot station.
The RAIB said they climbed out of the way onto Platform 1 at the station “with little time to spare”.
Equipment the track workers had placed on the track was struck, causing minor damage to the train.
The RAIB said it has undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Having assessed the evidence gathered to date, the RAIB has also decided to publish a safety digest, which will be made available in the near future on its website.
The RAIB has a duty co-ordinator and a team of inspectors on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – and responds when notified of an accident or incident, making contact with the railway to obtain sufficient further detail to decide how to respond.
Any response is influenced by whether the event is within the RAIB’s scope,
whether the investigation is mandated by law, whether there is important evidence at the scene, whether it is part of a trend – and the safety issues at stake.
