A man in his twenties is reported to be fighting for his life in hospital, after he fell from height at the Peter Jones Store in Kensington and Chelsea, London.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police were called to the store at 1.05pm on Tuesday (30/12/14), along with ambulance crews and the London Air Ambulance.

It is reported the man fell either from an escalator or possibly a balcony above third floor level at the store.

A female shopper told The Daily Telegraph that staff at the store asked shoppers to stand back from where the man landed – and said that they were told he had fallen from the fifth floor of the store, which at the time was full of shoppers attending the sales.

However, another shopper told BBC News that she had been on the first floor at the time of the incident and the man had fallen from the third or fourth floor of the shop.

The store closed for the afternoon following the incident and is due to open on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the store – which is part of the John Lewis group – said:

“John Lewis can confirm that police were called to our Peter Jones shop at 13.05 this afternoon following a serious customer incident.

“Police and London Ambulance service attended the scene and John Lewis continues to work with the relevant authorities.

“John Lewis has taken the decision to close Peter Jones early today, and will reopen tomorrow.”

Shoppers were evacuated from the store following the incident and were reported to be “upset” after the incident. Many who were in the store at the time of the incident have expressed their sympathies with the man and his family using social media.

Police enquiries into what happened and why the man plummeted down several floors are still ongoing.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said:

“We were called at 1.05pm today to reports of a man fallen from an escalator inside a department store in Kensington and Chelsea.

“Officers from the London Ambulance Service and the London Air Ambulance were also at the scene.

“A man – believed to be in his twenties – was taken to hospital with multiple injuries. Those injuries are thought to be life-threatening at this stage.

“Officers remain at the scene and our enquiries continue.”

The man who fell is being treated for head and chest injuries at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, west London.

Last night police confirmed that he was in a “serious but stable” condition in hospital.
