More money for GPs in Chancellor’s Autumn Statement NHS windfall (1 December 2014)

Chancellor George Osborne has confirmed that his autumn budget statement will include an extra £2 billion for the NHS – including extra money for GPs.

BBC News reports that Mr Osborne said the additional NHS funding would come partly from fines imposed on banks, with the remainder available as a result of Britain’s growing economy.

Pressure on the health service because of a growing population has led to some NHS patients being unable to obtain appointments – some patients say they have to wait for two weeks or more to see their GP.

An ageing population has also placed pressure on the health service – with many elderly people now visiting A&E departments for treatment for chronic conditions and health worries, rather than waiting to see their GP.

The Chancellor has said that the proposed £2bn in additional NHS funding is a “down payment” on the £8bn above inflation that doctors say the NHS needs by 2020 to maintain services.

Mr Osborne will announce more details about the extra NHS funding in his Autumn Statement on Wednesday (03/12/14).

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show on BBC1, Mr Osborne said:
“Because we have a strong economy and we've got the public finances under control, we can afford to put £2 billion into the frontline of the NHS across the United Kingdom.

“I can tell you we can go further and use those fines that have been paid by the banks for a permanent improvement in GP services.

“This is a down-payment on the NHS’ own long-term plan – and it shows you can have a strong NHS if you have a strong economy.”

Labour has said that, if elected in next year’s General Election, an additional £2.5bn above the Chancellor’s proposals would be found for the NHS budget.
