Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Middlesbrough Environmental Health Officers close down café over public health risk

Environmental Health Officers from Middlesbrough Council's Public Protection Service have closed down a Middlesbrough café, after it was found to pose a serious public health risk.

Environmental Health Officers visited Manolia Shawerma on Gresham Road in Middlesbrough on 3 November and uncovered evidence of a serious mouse infestation, poor standards of cleanliness – and food at risk of contamination.

The council was granted a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order by Teesside Magistrates' Court to keep the café closed.

The café will be allowed to re-open when the council is satisfied that the operator has taken all necessary steps to remove the pest infestation and sanitise the premises.

Middlesbrough Council’s Environmental Health Manager, Judith Hedgley, said:

“The presence of mouse droppings throughout the kitchen highlighted the scale of the infestation.

“Together with poor standards of cleanliness and food at risk of contamination, the conditions in this food business presented an imminent risk of injury to health.

“The officers used their powers under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013 to shut the café to protect public health.”

Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Adult Health and Social Care, Councillor Julia Rostron, added:

“Food businesses must be kept clean and free from pests at all times.

“The council's priority is to protect consumer safety – and therefore whenever Environmental Health Officers find conditions in a local food outlet that are a health risk, they are obliged to take prompt enforcement action.”
