The family of an engineer who died from asbestos-related mesothelioma cancer have been awarded compensation.
Mesothelioma is a life-shortening disease which can result from exposure to hazardous materials such as asbestos fibres or coal dust.
The first symptoms of mesothelioma can take decades to develop – and in some cases mesothelioma patients die before they are able to complete a claim for mesothelioma compensation.
In these cases, the family of a mesothelioma victim can make a claim or a compensation award can be made posthumously to the family of a mesothelioma victim.
Former engineer John Haspell was exposed to hazardous asbestos materials in the course of his work for Shell Chemicals at Carrington in Trafford, Greater Manchester between 1961 and 1984, Messenger Newpapers reports.
In September 2010, Mr Haspell was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma and died just weeks later.
Mr Haspell’s family pursued a claim for mesothelioma compensation following his death and an investigation revealed breaches in health and safety relating to asbestos exposure at Mr Haspell’s place of work.
Mr Haspell’s son-in-law, Andrew Giles, said:
“Mesothelioma is a particularly nasty disease and while it is too late for John, our family are anxious that all employers make every effort to protect their employees from such a devastating condition.”
The amount of the compensation award was undisclosed.
