A man from North London has been sentenced after his Japanese Akita dog launched a vicious attack on a female postwoman last September.
Ali Derin, 55, from Axminster Road in Holloway, north London was placed under curfew and electronically tagged for the attack. He was also fined £850 and his dog was destroyed after he pleaded guilty to allowing a dangerous breed to be out of control in a public place.
Derin was also banned from owning a dog in the future.
Highbury Magistrates’ Court heard that the postwoman was going about her rounds on 5 September last year when the dog launched an unprovoked attack on her, sinking its teeth into her lower leg.
Tollington Safer Neighbourhood Team Police Office Matt Fletcher was the first officer on the scene and traced the dog to Derin’s house nearby. The dog had escaped from the garden, the court heard.
Local newspaper the Islington Gazette reports that the area has “an unhappy history” of dog attacks, with some owners breeding them for antisocial reasons or for self-protection.
PC Fletcher said:
“This was a terrifying attack on a female who was just going about her job delivering the post.
“She has undertaken a number of operations on her leg and will have to live with scarring for the rest of her life.
“I hope this sentence is a reminder to all dog owners of their responsibilities.”
Director of Holloway’s Harmsworth Animal Hospital, David Grant, said that the hospital was full of abandoned animals – and staff also dealt with hundreds of dog bites every year.
