Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, MP calls for ban on lorries at rush hour to prevent cyclist injuries and deaths

The Labour MP for Tottenham in north London, David Lammy, has said he would consider banning lorries from London’s roads to help keep cyclists safe if he becomes Mayor of London.

Mr Lammy said he would consult on moving deliveries away from peak commuter times of between 7.30am and 9.30am, the Evening Standard reports.

The Mayoral hopeful has confessed that he would be “too scared” to cycle in the capital himself, however.

“My view is that only by banning HGVs from London during rush hour will we give cyclists the protection they need.

“We’ve got to take bold decisions – why can’t deliveries be made well into the night?” said Mr Lammy.

“There are some working practices London has got to change – too often everything seems to stop at about 4.30pm.”

Lorries have been involved in seven out of eight cyclist deaths on London’s roads so far in 2015 – with five deaths occurring during the rush hour.

Transport for London is due to launch the Safer Lorries Scheme this September – under the scheme, lorries without specific safety features will be banned from London’s roads.

Mr Lammy has said that the scheme does not go far enough to protect cyclists, however.
