More than 200 holidaymakers who stayed at Butlins holiday camps are taking legal action over allegations of failures in hygiene at the holiday camps – including a smell of raw sewage and dirty swimming pools.

Concerns have also been raised over the standard of food preparation at Butlins holiday camp in Bognor Regis, Sussex.

It is reported that the parent company of Butlins, Bourne Leisure, has denied the allegations of lapses in hygiene and food preparation at its holiday camps.

The leisure company said that it would be defending any legal action “robustly”.

The claims date back to 2011 and involve holidays which some holidaymakers who stayed at Butlins say were ruined as a result of the alleged problems with hygiene.

Any failure in health and safety and hygiene can cause outbreaks of serious bacterial infections such as Salmonella and E.coli – while dirty swimming pool water can lead to the parasitic infection Cryptosporidium, which is mainly transmitted via the faecal-oral route if water is contaminated with human or animal faeces. The claims against Butlins at Bognor Regis are reported to be related to an outbreak of Norovirus.

A spokesman for Butlins in Bognor Regis issued a statement saying:

“We will robustly defend this speculative action raised at the High Court in Birmingham – we operate our resorts to the highest health and safety standards and work closely with the Health and Safety Executive to ensure that our guests' safety takes priority.

“Our standards of cleanliness and hygiene are recognised throughout the tourist industry worldwide. Such is our reputation on health issues that environmental officers from around the UK have described our policies and procedure as ‘outstanding’.”

BBC News reports that around 215 holidaymakers are currently pursuing claims against the company.
