A mother-of-two who was seriously injured after being hit by a motorist racing a friend at 70mph has asked for an image of her lying in hospital to be published to highlight the dangers of speeding on roads.

Helen Beere underwent 12 hours of surgery for multiple injuries after the accident, which happened at 11pm on 6 June 2013.

Mrs Beere from Coventry in Warwickshire was crossing a road near her home on her bicycle as the two motorists ? 31-year-old Keith Riley and 22-year-old Anas Raja ? were racing along the same road. Riley and Raja were travelling at 70mph in a 30mph zone, Leamington Crown Court heard.

Mrs Beere, 40, was hit by Riley’s car, with the impact breaking her bicycle in two. She sustained broken legs, a broken collarbone, broken arm and shattered elbow.

The Daily Mail reports that nine months after the accident, Mrs Beere is still using crutches and has been told she may never be able to run again.

In court, the two men admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Riley was jailed for 28 months and was banned from driving for four years.

Raja was banned from driving for two years. He also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and was sentenced to 18 months.

Mrs Beere said the sentences were “reasonable”.

“I was pleased they were both jailed immediately,” she added.

“It’s worrying people can have such disregard for other people using the road,” said Mrs Beere.

West Midlands Police said that the jail terms down by the court “should serve as a warning to anyone who thinks they can use a public road as a race track“.
