The driver of a car which crashed in Leeds – killing two young passengers and leaving another paraplegic and a fourth with serious head injuries –has been sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in jail.
On 7 March 2015, Thomas McMeekin – who was 21 years old at the time – gave a lift to four young boys. However, driving at recklessly high speeds along Geldard Road in Leeds, McMeekin crashed.
He was left tetraplegic from injuries he sustained in the crash.
After sentencing, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, Andrew Penhale, said:
“This terrible incident resulted in the tragic loss of two young boy's lives, and left two others with life-changing injuries – the defendant also has suffered severe injuries.
“The responsibility for this devastating incident lies entirely with the driver, who chose to drive dangerously and recklessly, attempting to reach speeds of 100mph between traffic lights with four young passengers in his car – with catastrophic consequences for all.
“Despite the fact that McMeekin was himself very seriously injured, we came to the decision that the consequences of his actions were so exceptionally grave that it was in the public interest to prosecute him.
“Our thoughts remain with the families of the four boys – I hope the sentence imposed today will bring them a small measure of comfort.”
