Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Inquest hears how paramedics battled to save soldier who collapsed during SAS selection exercise

An inquest in the West Midlands into the deaths of three soldiers on an SAS selection exercise has heard how an Army medic had not been told that the exercise should be halted after one soldier collapsed and died from heat-related illness on Brecon Beacon in Wales.

BBC News reports that Lieutenant Corporal Craig Roberts, 24, from Penrhyn Bay in Conwy died on the exercise on a ”boiling hot” day in July 2013.

L/Cpl Roberts’ colleagues L/Cpl Edward Maher and Cpl James Dunsby later died in hospital after collapsing.

The Coroner heard that after L/Cpl Roberts collapsed, it could have taken as long as 45 minutes for a 999 call to be made to summon help. Temperatures reached 27C (80.6F) on the day the three soldiers collapsed.

The ambulance crew found an Army truck about 10 minutes after they had been dispatched – and then had to walk for half-an-hour to reach L/Cpl Roberts, the inquest was told.

Ambulance technician Wayne Thomas told how everyone had “tried their hardest and their best” to save L/Cpl Roberts – and explained to the coroner how resuscitation was used and medication given.

A statement from paramedic Geraint Tucker read:

“The environment was boiling hot – the first thing I did was ask for water, which I was given; but I cannot comment on how much water was available.”

Mr Tucker’s statement also said there was “more than adequate equipment and knowledge” from the medics who attended the scene.

The inquest continues.
