The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has launched an inquiry after a 37-year-old Asian man died from a heart attack after being arrested by police in Camden, north London.
The man was stopped by police officers on June 5 on a cycle path near Agar Grove in Camden and died three days later on June 8 at University College Hospital.
An ambulance crew was called to the scene of the arrest at around 11.30am – and police investigators are calling for witnesses to the incident. Police officers have been carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area to try and locate any witnesses who might have information about what happened on June 5.
IPCC Commissioner Jennifer Izekor told local publisher Camden New Journal:
“This is a tragic incident in which a 37-year-old man has died.
“The IPCC will carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances and nature of his contact with the police, the events leading up to his becoming unwell, his hospitalisation and subsequent death.
“My thoughts and sympathy are with his family at what must be an incredibly difficult time,” she said.
An inquest into the man’s death will be opened at St Pancreas Coroner’s Court following post-mortem results.
