Hartlepool Council has announced that a service of remembrance is being held in memory of those killed or workers injured in workplace accidents.

Organised by Hartlepool Trades Union Council (HTUC), the annual Workers Memorial Day event will take place in the Hartlepool Art Gallery and Tourist Information Centre within Christ Church in Church Square on Friday 28 April at 12.30pm.

The event will include high-profile speakers – such as President of ASLEF, Tosh McDonald; GMB European Officer, Kathleen Walkershaw; Regional Secretary of UNISON, Clare Williams – and Vice-President of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Mchelle Muxwothy.

The council said that the theme this year’s event was “good health and safety for all workers whoever they are” – and it will focus on inequalities in occupational health and safety.

HTUC has been holding a Workers Memorial Day service and wreath laying ceremony in Hartlepool since 1999 – and it has taken place on official International Workers Memorial Day on 28 April since 2000.

President of HTUC, Edwin Jeffries, said:

“This is an extremely important event, as it is the only day of the year when employees who have died, been injured – or made ill through their work while trying to earn an honest living – are publicly remembered.

“Each year, more people are killed by work than in wars – most do not die of mystery ailments or in tragic accidents: they die because of a health and safety failure.

“Every year, over two million people worldwide are killed by their, or someone else’s, work – that’s about 5,000 a day.

“It is only with enforceable and enforced legislation – and employers working with trade unions to improve health and safety in all workplaces – that we can ever hope to reduce the number of workplace accidents, injuries, diseases and deaths that, in the majority of cases, are avoidable.”

The council said that the service is open to everyone – especially all families, friends and colleagues who wish to remember loved ones who have lost their lives in workplace accidents.

Following the service, more than 40 wreaths will be laid by individuals and organisations at the Workers Memorial in Church Square – and individual flowers will be provided for anyone wishing to pay their own tribute.
