A holidaymaker who had to take more than a month off work after contracting salmonella in Egypt is suing the tour operator for compensation.

Jake Ankers, 24, from Manchester stayed at the Sensatori Hotel in Sharm El Sheikh, after booking a package holiday with Thomson.

Mr Ankers required medical attention on holiday after he developed severe abdominal pains and diarrhoea. His symptoms were so severe that he required a wheelchair to leave the plane on arrival back in the UK in June.

He is now recovering from the salmonella infection – but doctors have advised him that he might have developed post-infective irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as a result. He has lost more than a stone in weight since falling ill in Egypt.

Mr Ankers – who regularly trains at a gym – said:

“My dream holiday became a nightmare. The pains first occurred when we went down for an evening meal – and when I woke up the next morning, the pains were stronger and I suffered from severe diarrhoea.

“I visited the onsite clinic for support – and was put on an IV drip and given antibiotics – but it got worse.

“The flight home was just awful. By the time we landed back in the UK, I needed a wheelchair to get off the plane as the pain was just so unbearable – I was in agony.”

Thomson has said that it carries out checks to ensure the health and safety of the resorts it uses, including checking that hygiene and comfort are maintained to industry standards.

Manchester Evening News reports that Mr Ankers is now taking legal advice on seeking compensation from Thomson. It is reported his legal team are also representing other holidaymakers who stayed at the Sensatori between 2013 and 2014 – and one family of four has already been awarded £35,000 in holiday illness compensation after they stayed at the Sensatori in 2012.

Mr Ankers has now been able to return to work, but added:

“The illness completely ruined what should have been a happy ending to a relaxing holiday – and you would never think that such problems will happen to you.

“I am a keen gym-goer and work hard to keep fit. Since the holiday, I have lost lots of weight and don’t feel like myself – I still can’t eat properly. I just want answers.”

Thomson says that it is now investigating Mr Ankers’ claims that he contracted salmonella at the Sensatori.

A spokesman for Thomson said:

“We are sorry to hear of Mr Ankers’ experience at the Sensatori Resort Sharm El Sheikh in June.

“As we understand this is now subject to legal proceedings, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.

“Thomson closely audits all resorts to which we operate to ensure that health, hygiene and comfort levels are maintained in line with industry standards –
and this hotel continues to be a popular choice.”
