A 23-year-old Cardiff man whose American bulldog killed his grandmother on Friday (20/03/15) has been remanded in custody after the case was sent to Cardiff Crown Court.

The Daily Mail reports that Craig Greve lived with his grandmother Rhona in Ely, Cardiff, where he kept the dog, called Solo.

Greve had lived with his grandmother after his mother had a stroke at a very young age.

The court heard how Rhona Greve – a mother of four and grandmother of 21 – had brought him up as her own son.

The court was also told that Mrs Greve had cared for her husband before he died from emphysema. She had been an animal lover who had enjoyed the company of her grandson’s dog after her husband’s death five years ago.

However, on Friday night, the American bulldog turned on her and inflicted 16 wounds to her neck. The animal was described by police officers called to the scene as snarling and having blood on its teeth after it had savaged Mrs Greve – who died later at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff as a result of severe injuries to her face and neck.

Family members were in the courtroom on Tuesday to hear Craig Greve being charged under the Dangerous Dogs Act with keeping a dog that was dangerously out-of-control.

At Cardiff Magistrates’ Court, Greve pleaded guilty to one count of having a dog while being banned for life from doing so – and one count of being the owner of a dangerously out-of-control dog.

Mrs Greve’s daughter Clare said after the hearing:

“It all happened so quickly – when I arrived at hospital she was already gone.

“They asked me if I wanted to see her body but I didn't have the heart. I didn't want to see her like that.

“She was a brilliant mum and she didn't deserve to go like that. I can only imagine what Craig is going through right now. He must be devastated.

“We're all waiting to find out more about what has happened. You just never expect something like this.”

The court was told by Craig Greve’s defence lawyer that he had been with his grandmother when she was attacked and when she died.

“This is an extremely tragic case – he is the grandson of the deceased. He saw what happened and was with her when she passed away.”

A 17-year-old boy also arrested in connection with the incident was released on police bail pending further inquiries.
