Medway Council is offering residents free oral health check ups in support of November’s Mouth Cancer Action Month.
The annual awareness campaign is held by the Oral Health Foundation – and aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer to help save thousands of lives through early detection and prevention.
Although there are risk factors heavily linked to mouth cancer, the disease can affect anybody – in the UK, more than 7,500 people were diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2105.
More than 2,000 people die each year in the UK from mouth cancer – more than testicular and cervical cancer combined.
Medway Council has joined forces with Medway Community Healthcare to hold 12 free mouth check sessions during November to raise awareness of symptoms of mouth cancer.
In a survey conducted by the Oral Health Foundation, one in ten people admitted that they had not been seen by a dentist for a check-up in the last two years.
Medway residents have the opportunity to be checked over by a dentist, away from the dental surgery and without a pre-booked appointment.
The free mouth checks are being held at the Medway Stop Smoking Shop, in Railway Street, near the High Street in Chatham.
