A court in Hove has jailed four men found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent, after the man they stabbed contracted a blood infection – and ended up having all four of his limbs amputated.

BBC News reports that the gang’s victim, Ernest Moyo – known as ‘Joe’ – was 25 at the time of the vicious attack in July 2010.

Mr Moyo was leaving a party when Patrick Brookes, 27, from Clifton Road in Worthing, Jeramiah Reynolds, 26, from Ascham End in Walthamstow, east London, Dominic Brookes, 19, from Bramble Close in Croydon, south London and Trey Johnson, 17, from Victoria Road in Worthing, West Sussex attacked him.

All four men denied the charges against them, but were found guilty.

Patrick Brookes was jailed for 16 years – while Jeramiah Reynolds, Dominic Brookes and Trey Johnson were sentenced to 15 years in jail for the attack.

Johnson – a minor – was named by the court. Johnson and Dominic Brookes will serve their sentences at Young Offender Institutions.

Mr Moyo was stabbed in the thigh and twice in the abdomen by the men, the court heard. The attack followed a row about a mobile phone.

After an infection spread through his body, doctors amputated his limbs to save his life. His family initially told him he had been involved in a car accident. Mr Moyo now has prosthetic limbs.

Judge Anthony Niblett said at Hove Crown Court that the outcome of the attack had been “devastating” for Mr Moyo and his family.

“There's only one reason for the nature and extent of these injuries – that is the use of knives,” he told the court.
"People who use knives must understand the risks involved – and that the injuries sustained by the victims will be of the greatest seriousness."

After the hearing, Mr Moyo told the BBC that he was coping with his injuries as best as he could.
"The prosthetics make life that little bit easier for me,” said Mr Moyo. "I just have to live with it, learning new things day by day."

MPs are today (17/06/14) voting on a Commons Amendment, which would see the introduction of automatic jail terms for those convicted of a second knife crime.

Hackney Council in east London has criticised the “soft” approach taken by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) towards gang culture and knife crime, saying that the CPS will only prosecute knife crime if there is an 80% chance of a conviction.

The CPS has denied this and says that its prosecuting lawyers are committed to tackling gang culture.
