Wyre Council in Lancashire has prosecuted a fish processing factory, after environmental health officers found poor hygiene conditions which could have put consumers at risk of food poisoning.

At an inspection of the Oban Fish Selling Co Ltd, council officers found dirty tables and equipment, damaged floors, walls and ceilings, cigarette ends in food storage areas, inadequate record keeping – and insufficient food safety management procedures in the wet fish processing factory.

At Blackpool Magistrates’ Court, Oban Fish Selling Co Ltd pleaded guilty to nine offences under regulation 19 of the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013.

The company was fined £13,500 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £170 and full costs of £1,639.

After sentencing, Head of Environmental Health and Community Safety at Wyre Council, Neil Greenwood, said:

“Wyre Council takes food hygiene very seriously and if premises don’t comply we have no option but to consider formal action.

“However, we do want to help businesses achieve compliance and always encourage proprietors to work with us."

In 2016-2017, Wyre Council inspected a total of 1,116 food companies in the borough, of which 93% were broadly compliant with food safety and hygiene regulations.
