A father whose son died at Hillsborough as received an apology from the police match commander David Duckenfield.

BBC News reports that Barry Devonshire’s son Christopher was 18 when he died at Hillsborough in1989, after thousands of football fans at the Sheffield stadium were allowed in through a gate and made their way to spectator stands, which were already full.

Retired police commander David Duckenfield has been giving evidence this week at new inquests into the deaths of football fans in the Hillsborough tragedy, where 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

The former Chief Superintendent Duckenfield was the senior officer in charge at the Sheffield stadium during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

This week Mr Duckenfield admitted that allowing thousands of fans into the grounds without first closing a gate to a tunnel leading to the spectator stands was the “direct cause” of the deaths of so many fans at Hillsborough.

Mr Devonshire from Formby in Liverpool had driven to the match with his son. He said he challenged Mr Duckenfield outside the coroner’s court in Warrington in Cheshire. Mr Devonshire told BBC News that he asked Mr Duckenfield:

”Could you tell me why you kept me, my wife and my daughter waiting for 26 years – and all of the other families as well?
“I looked him in the eye and he looked me in the eye,” said Mr Devonshire.
“He apologised to me and said, 'I can't say any more' – and walked off.

“I think he was trying to be genuine, but it was short and sweet, what he had to say – so it was very hard to decipher what was behind it.”
The inquests continue.
