The family of a 23-year-old man killed on a ski slope in Austria are calling for more safety measures to be implemented on ski runs at the resort St Anton.
IT sales consultant Aleksander Owens-Thurston died last Monday (24/02/14) after he hit an artificial snow cannon at full speed after losing control on a slope.
Mr Owens-Thurston was not wearing a safety helmet, but his father Phillip Owens-Thurston, 49 – an IT expert from Coulsdon in Surrey – said that in this case a helmet would not have protected his son from the force of the blow to his head.
The metal snow cannon which his son crashed into after losing control on a slope was not fitted with protective cladding.
Austrian police said that Aleksander lost control and slid down a slope on a black run at the resort, before “shooting up into the air at the side of the ski run”.
“He hit his head against the arm of an artificial snow cannon at full speed”, said police spokesman Markus Maier.
Aleksander’s father said:
“I believe my son may have stood more of a chance of survival if there was something around [the snow cannon].”
Black ski runs are considered to be the hardest slopes compared with other ski runs. Blue ski runs are the easiest and red are classed as intermediary level.
