Elephant and Castle “London’s most dangerous junction for cyclists” (27 February 2015)

A survey by insurance company Aviva has found that Elephant and Castle in south London has the highest rate of road traffic collisions involving cyclists in London.
Aviva researchers found that between 2009 and 2013 there were 80 police reports made about collisions involving cyclists at Elephant and Castle – in 2014, a fatal cycle accident occurred at Elephant and Castle – and in 2009 another fatal cycle accident occurred on the roundabout at Elephant and Castle.
Trafalgar Square came second as one of the most dangerous junctions in London for cyclists, with 46 incidents reported to police.
Aviva researchers analysed 23,000 collisions involving cyclists on London’s roads within the M25.
The figures coincide with a written answer from London Mayor Boris Johnson to Liberal Democrat MPs at City Hall, which has revealed that Transport for London (TfL) has only spent a total of £29 million of its £82m budget for cycling in the capital this year.
The budget was slashed from £107m to £82m in 2014-2015, partly because of alterations to the phasing in of road safety schemes for cyclists. Savings were also made on the Mayor’s “Boris Bikes” scheme.
The LibDems said it was “appalling” that TfL had failed to spend is budget on “vital improvements” to make cycling in London safer.
TfL is introducing four new cycle superhighways in the future, as well as improving existing routes for cyclists.
