Environmental Health officers at Tower Hamlets Borough Council have prosecuted a café for breaches of food hygiene regulations following a rodent infestation.
Café Fresh based at 29-31Commercial Road in east London was operated by Fresh Frill Café Limited and director Mr Mahbub Alam.
The restaurant was closed by Environmental Heath Officers on 30 October 2015, following a severe mouse infestation and the discovery of contaminated foods.
Food Hygiene Improvement Notices were served on the business by the Environmental Health Officer – who discovered that the notices had not been complied with when they revisited the cafe on 18 December.
As a result, it was decided that 12 hygiene offences had been committed, including failure to comply with Hygiene Improvement Notices.
At Thames Magistrates’ Court, Alam pleaded guilty to the charges and was fined £5,220. He was also ordered to a pay a contribution towards costs to the council in bringing the matter to court and a £54 victim surcharge.
As a result of the closure, the café was also fined £12,000 and ordered to pay the remaining prosecution costs to the sum of £2,685.15 with a victim surcharge of £120.
The full amount owed by the company is £18,805.15.
Officers have since re-inspected the premises and have found that standards have improved to a satisfactory condition.
